Acer recently made an announcement that they will be the first netbook manufacturer to start shipping Chrome OS this year. With goals to ship approximately one million netbooks with the open source operating system from Google, Acer looks to capture the market as demand for Chrome OS increases thanks to the success of Google’s Android brand.
Google Chrome OS is a proprietary operating system that’s essentially a derivative of Linux with a focus on making daily tasks such as reading e-mail and watching YouTube painless. As its release nears, netbook manufacturers are starting to get ready as Chrome OS powered netbooks will start shipping this year.
The good news is that shortly, Chrome OS will ship as standard with many netbooks. Some manufacturers are even setting up dual-boot configurations so that you have the choice between lightening fast Chrome OS for high speed web browsing, or Windows if you need the flexibility of a ‘traditional’ OS. Essentially, the goal is to make browsing and using the Internet on netbooks a great deal more user friendly than at present. If you’re in the market for a budget netbook, Chrome OS may very well be the perfect choice.
However, what makes this operating system so special is the fact that it’s been designed from the ground up for netbooks. Google’s aim was to make it really easy for those who spend most of their time on the web and as a result, it’s lightening quick and according to the team at Google, will be able to boot up in as little as just seven seconds.
Chrome OS is scheduled to be released by the end of 2010 and it’s going to have similarities to Android and Linux. Essentially part computer, part mobile computing device, Chrome OS will come with various vendor specific application stores making it easier for developers and users to find the programs they need.
What makes Google Chrome OS the most revolutionary operating system out there is the fact that it will have a large dependence on web technology. Hailed as the first web based operating system, it will certainly be interesting to see just how Chrome OS unfolds… We’ll keep you posted.
