Taiwan based manufacturer, Asus has recently announced that it will be launching an e-reader dubbed the ‘Eee Book’. With 2010 being dubbed the age of the reader and also tablet PC, Asus are certainly working towards securing a portion of the market just as they have with their successful netbook brand of Eee PCs. Whether or not it’s enough to stave off competition from the Apple iPad which is due to launch in less than 60 days remains to be seen, but with Computex Taipei due in just a few months, we’ll soon find out just what the netbook giant really has to offer.
From the looks of things, the Eee Book looks set to be an almost a semi-embedded system running minimalist hardware to maximize the battery life and also affordability. Some rumors state that it’ll have both tablet PC and also reader functionality and it’ll be coming to us for as little as $100, but frankly, we find that hard to believe. If Asus are able to pull this off, they may very well steal the market.
With claims that the Eee Book will open like a real book and have dual colour touch-screen technology, this may very well be a kindle or even an iPad beater. With Apple CEO Steve Jobs recently having slated the entire Netbook market, It would seem that the original pioneer, Asus is about to do their best to show Jobs just how wrong he is.
Alongside plans to launch a new tablet netbook, Asus are looking strong in 2010. With the firm clearly committed towards launching a slew of new products, it’s only a matter of time until they bring us another pioneering innovation. If the EEE Book really is going to be the cheapest reader around, then at a fifth of the price of an iPad, it’ll be an absolute steal.
